Rubber plant

also known as the Ficus elastica, it, is an unusual-looking varietal native to the tropics of Southeast Asia. This long-lived plant boasts oversized, oval-shaped leaves with a rich emerald hue and can grow quickly, reaching up to 100 feet tall in its natural habitat. It’s not the easiest plant for beginners because it’s not very forgiving if it doesn’t get the care it needs. However, it’s more often grown indoors as a houseplant, where it can be planted and cared for year-round, and its size is kept more manageable.

When it comes to caring for a rubber plant, care is straightforward. It needs adequate light, moisture, and warmth (it is a tropical plant). Give it a southern or eastern exposure, but keep it several feet away from the windows, and you’ll be rewarded with an exotic addition to your indoor plant collection.

How to Grow Rubber Tree Indoors

The rubber plant has waxy-looking leaves that start with a pink-coral hue, eventually deepening to dark rich green. As the plant grows, it will begin to droop, so you must help support its leaves by using a long wooden dowel (or bamboo stalk) to help keep them upright.

Sunlight

Like most plants in their genus, rubber plants love lots of bright, diffused light. They can tolerate soft morning sunlight but should be moved out of the line of harsh direct rays in the afternoon as they can singe the leaves. Plants that do not receive sufficient light will become leggy, lose their lower leaves, and their leaf color will become dull instead of glossy and vibrant.

Watering

Water your rubber plant frequently—they like to be kept steadily moist but not soaked. Rubber plants also are vulnerable to excessive dryness and don’t tolerate drought well. To check if its time for another watering, check the moisture levels in the first few inches of soil—if they’re dry and crumbly, it’s time to water your plant again.

Temperature and Humidity

Like other types of ficus trees, these plants are vulnerable to cool drafts. Unhealthy plants will become leggy, with stretching internodes, and the leaves might first turn yellow and then brown before dropping off entirely. Generally, rubber trees are best kept in moderate to warm temperatures between 60 degrees Fahrenheit and 75 degrees Fahrenheit, with moderate humidity as well. If your home tends to be dry, invest in a space humidifier to increase the levels.

Fertilizer

Feed the plant a weak liquid fertilizer throughout the growing season. They are relatively heavy feeders when healthy. Some experts recommend only lightly fertilizing indoor plants to prevent stretching and plants becoming root-bound because they grow too fast.

Bird’s Nest Fern Plant

Bird’s nest ferns (Asplenium nidus) are naturally epiphytic, meaning they grow on the surface of other plants. In their rainforest homes, they can be found growing high in the crooks of trees. They form a series of erect, spoon-shaped, bright green fronds that rise from a central rosette. Healthy plants can have fronds up to 5 feet long, but bird’s nest ferns kept as houseplants typically have fronds that grow only about 2 feet long. These ferns have a slow growth rate. They’re best planted in the spring, though houseplants generally can be started year-round.

Bird’s Nest Fern Care

The key to a healthy bird’s nest fern is providing it with ample warmth, humidity, and moisture. When growing it as a houseplant, one of the best places to situate a bird’s nest fern is near a shower or tub in a bathroom where it will receive optimal humidity and warmth, though it must have a light source as well.

New leaves will constantly emerge from the central area of the plant, which resembles a bird’s nest. Do not touch, move, or handle the new, delicate fronds as they emerge from the center. They are extremely fragile, and if you touch them, there is a high chance of them becoming damaged or deformed.

Light

Bird’s nest ferns grow well in filtered sunlight to a moderate amount of shade. Don’t expose them to direct sunlight other than the very early morning sun. Harsh direct sunlight can burn the leaves. Indoors, an east- or north-facing window is ideal.

Soil

These plants like soil that’s loose and rich in organic matter with excellent drainage. A peat-based potting mix is good for container plants.

Water

The ferns prefer a consistent amount of soil moisture, but they don’t do well sitting in soggy soil. Water whenever the top inch of soil is dry. Avoid watering directly into the center of the plant, as this can encourage mold growth and rot in the dense nest. Aim water at the soil to avoid wetting the fern’s fronds.

Temperature and Humidity

The bird’s nest fern thrives in warmth with temperatures between 60 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit. It can tolerate temperatures down to 50 degrees, but anything colder than that can harm the plant, especially with prolonged exposure. Indoors, be sure to protect your plant from cool drafts, such as air blowing from an air-conditioning vent.

This fern prefers high humidity and moist environments, such as a bathroom, greenhouse, or terrarium. To raise the humidity around a bird’s nest fern, you can use a humidifier. Or you can set its pot on a tray filled with pebbles and water. But make sure the bottom of the pot isn’t sitting in the water because that can lead to root rot.

Fertilizer

During the fern’s active growing season (April through September), fertilize once a month with a balanced liquid fertilizer that’s diluted to half strength. Make sure to apply the fertilizer to the soil and not the fronds, as direct contact with fertilizer can burn foliage. Withhold fertilizer for the rest of the year because too much food can cause the fronds to have an abnormal shape or take on a yellowish or brownish color.

Plant Advice: Except for complete darkness and full sun,Zenzi will

Characteristics: The ZZ , more commonly known as the Zenzi ZZ Plant, is a indoor plant that beginners will be able to take care of with no trouble at all. The dark green leaves have a strong tinge of black to them, which usually means that a plant will be harder to care for. The upright foliage will show up very well when potted, with its distinct colour standing out from the rest due to its stark palette.

appreciate almost any light conditions – its not a fussy plant. You should let the plant dry out between waterings, perhaps only carrying the process out once or twice a month – again, it won’t mind if you forget to do so.

Zenzi ZZ Plant

The Zenzi Plant is a relatively new kid on the block. It is a dwarf cultivar of the ZZ Plant with a thick, compact habit and very dark green leaves. This fascinating, uber-modern houseplant is absolutely perfect as a desk plant, guaranteed to lighten the mood, no matter how dark the office !Please note: these plants like to be pot bound and the grow pots can often be distorted into an oval shape.

A wild new contender against the old favourite zamifolia, this is a much stockier and denser cultivar. It grows lower to the ground with smaller spaces between the leaves, but has many of the same characteristics.

It is happiest kept in high light conditions with minimal watering. It also enjoys being pot bound, so there is no need to re-pot until it has actually broken out of the pot it is in.

Be careful when moving it around, as the base of the leaves (that look like stems) can easily be snapped at the base. This can be exacerbated by overwatering, which softens the leaves and can lead to rotting.

Zenzi ZZ Plant Care

Zenzi ZZ plants are known for being a low-maintenance, easy-to-care-for houseplants that even gardeners with the blackest of thumbs can keep alive with minimum care. All they need to thrive is adequate light and a good watering every couple of weeks. However, don’t worry too much about forgetting to water your zz plant—these plants grow from rhizomes, which help them to store water under the soil, making them a drought-tolerant plant. Though it thrives outdoors in Africa, it’s best grown indoors elsewhere. If you want to grow it outside, plant it in a container that can be brought indoors when the temperatures cool.

ZZ plants have naturally shiny leaves that can begin to look dull over time as dust accumulates. Never clean the leaves of a Zanzibar gem with a commercial leaf shine as it will clog the pores of the plant. Instead, gently wipe away dust and debris with a damp washcloth to restore its shine.

Light

ZZ plants are tolerant of a wide range of lighting conditions, which makes them well-suited to indoor growing. The plants grow well in low light conditions but prefer bright, indirect light. The plants can quickly become leggy when not given enough light, however. Avoid direct sunlight, as this can scorch the leaves of a your plants.

Soil

ZZ plants are not overly picky about their potting medium as long as it is well-draining. Most standard potting mixes should be sufficient for your plant. If additional drainage is required, mixing in perlite or sand will help.

Water

Thanks to their thick rhizomes, these plants are extremely drought-tolerant and can handle infrequent watering. ZZ plants should generally be watered once the soil dries out completely—usually once every two weeks, depending on their growing conditions. It’s better to water your plant less than giving it too much water. When watering, give it enough so that the moisture runs out of the bottom of the pot and throw out the excess water.

Temperature and Humidity

Average household temperatures and humidity are fine for Zanzibar gems. ZZ plants do not tolerate cold temperatures well (no lower than 45 degrees Fahrenheit), so avoid placing your plant in a location close to drafts or particularly cold areas of your home. ZZ plants don’t require humid conditions, but if your home runs on the dry side, consider increasing the humidity around your plant by purchasing a humidifier or placing it on top of a water tray.

Fertilizer

ZZ plants generally do not require regular fertilizing to thrive. However, if you’re hoping to increase your plant’s size or vigor, fertilize your plant with indoor plant fertilizer diluted to half-strength one to two times during its active growing season.

The Zamioculcas zamiifolia Zenz Plant is a relatively new kid on the block. It is a dwarf cultivar of the Zenzi Plant with a thick, compact habit and very dark green leaves.

ZZ plants are known for being a low-maintenance, easy-to-care-for houseplants that even gardeners with the blackest of thumbs can keep alive with minimum care.

Zenzi ZZ plants have naturally shiny leaves that can begin to look dull over time as dust accumulates.

Zenzi ZZ plants do not tolerate cold temperatures well (no lower than 45 degrees Fahrenheit), so avoid placing your plant in a location close to drafts or particularly cold areas of your home. ZZ plants don’t require humid conditions, but if your home runs on the dry side, consider increasing the humidity around your plant by purchasing a humidifier or placing it on top of a water tray.

Fertilizer

Zenzi ZZ plants generally do not require regular fertilizing to thrive. However, if you’re hoping to increase your plant’s size or vigor, fertilize your plant with indoor plant fertilizer diluted to half-strength one to two times during its active growing season.

Chinese Evergreen Plant

Aglaonema Maria Christina is a very pristine looking indoor plant that can be housed with immense pride. This plant boasts some very neat and clean looking foliage of mint green coloring, mixed in with sporadic dark green additions throughout. The Chinese Evergreen, as its more commonly known, is one that can offer many benefits to the atmosphere it is placed in as well, with the air-purifying qualities removing harmful pollutants and unwanted toxins from the air. The plant will appreciate being placed in partial shade, with watering having to be done up to three times a month. That amount can decrease as the year progresses into Winter and warmer weather begins to fade away.

Please Note: Images are for illustrative purposes only and designed to be a representation of the item(s) being sold. Depending on seasonality, deciduous plants may be supplied in their dormant state and without leaves. Plants may also be pruned back, lower than stated heights, to encourage new growth.

Chinese Evergreen Care

If you’re looking for a beautiful, easy-to-care-for houseplant, a Chinese evergreen plant may be the way to go. Beloved for its (nearly) hands-free care, the plant is simple to nurture, provided you follow one simple rule: The lighter the variegation on the plant’s leaves, the more sunlight it will need. Once you understand how that applies to your specific Chinese evergreen, you should have no problem helping it thrive. Beyond that, keep your plant warm and moist, and you’ll be rewarded with a long-lasting, stable houseplant that will not outgrow its pot anytime soon.

Light

Darker green varieties of Chinese evergreen plant can grow in near-shade, while the variegated varieties require a bit more bright light. Take care not to expose any of the plants (no matter the variety) to direct sunlight, as the harsh rays can easily burn the delicate leaves.

Soil

Ultimately, the Chinese evergreen isn’t particularly picky when it comes to the soil it’s planted in. Typically, a well-drained, slightly acidic potting soil is perfect for the plant. If you find that your chosen soil is retaining too much water, try mixing in sand or perlite to aid in drainage. You should also make sure to plant your Chinese evergreen in a pot with ample drainage holes at its base.

Water

The Chinese evergreen thrives in moist but not water-logged soil. To achieve this balance, water your plant thoroughly, then allow it to dry out before watering again. You can maintain this cadence through the spring, summer, and fall, tapering off in the winter (but never letting the plant dry out completely).

Temperature and Humidity

These plants do not like cold drafts or temperatures below 65 degrees Fahrenheit. Be sure to keep your Chinese evergreen away from windows or vents that blast in cool temperatures—the warmer the spot you can find, the better.

Due to its high humidity requirements, some growers consider Chinese evergreen plant to be a greenhouse plant. It will do best in the warm, humid, and bright environment of a greenhouse, but it can be successfully grown indoors by coming as close as possible to these conditions. To increase the humidity levels around your plant, mist it frequently, and consider placing it in a humidity-prone area of your home, like your kitchen or bathroom. If your home is particularly dry, you can invest in a small space humidifier to put near your plant.

Fertilizer

For best results, feed your Chinese evergreen plant with slow-release pellets or liquid fertilizer twice a year, at the beginning and end of its growing season.

Perfect for gifting and indoors and outdoors! These plant pots can be placed in your office, entryway, living room, sunny window, garden, etc.
